What is reality? It’s a seemingly simple question. But penetrate beneath its surface and the simplicity drops away, a succession of subsequent questions luring you deeper—to where even more questions await.
Ask yourself whether you can actually know the answers, much less be sure that you can know them, and you’ve begun to grapple with the metaphysical and epistemological quandaries that have occupied, teased, and tormented modern philosophy’s greatest intellects since the dawn of modern science and a century before the Enlightenment.

During this rich period of philosophy, fascinating minds like Kant, Locke, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein (to name but a few) struggled to improve our understanding of the world against the backdrop of unprecedented scientific, technological, and historical developments. The resulting tension brought forth a vast range of questions:

* Is the scientific view of the world compatible with human experience? And is the issue made more difficult by concepts like free will, moral responsibility, and religion?
* What is the mind’s place in a physical world? And is the mind itself different from the brain?
* Is there such a thing as objective truth? What are the implications of the answer for politics, science, religion, and other aspects of human civilization?

And, ultimately, the most important question of them all:

* What is the ultimate nature of reality, and what are the limitations on our knowledge of it?

To understand the answers to these questions—as well as the ideas of the modern philosophers who asked them—is to amplify not only your understanding of the Western intellectual tradition, but of history and science as well. And you will likely become an even more astute observer of contemporary trends and events by developing broader and deeper perspectives from which to observe them.

The Modern Intellectual Tradition: From Descartes to Derrida offers you an introduction to the basics of modern and contemporary Western approaches to the philosophies of both reality (metaphysics) and knowledge (epistemology), right through the end of the 20th century, when some philosophers were even questioning the value of philosophy itself. Led by author and award-winning Professor Lawrence Cahoone of the College of the Holy Cross, these 36 lectures will take you on an engaging intellectual journey that encompasses prominent figures from all the major traditions of Western philosophy.

You’ll explore the ideas behind modern philosophy’s most important movements, including

* dualism, where much of modern philosophy began;
* rationalism, which views reason as the seat of all knowledge;
* empiricism, which views the senses as the source of all knowledge;
* idealism, where ideas formed the basis of the nature of reality;
* existentialism, the iconic 20th-century philosophy of alienation; and
* postmodernism, which radically refuses all notion of objective truth.

Just as important, you’ll get a clear sense of how these and other movements fit into philosophy’s broader progression—for example, the division into “analytic” and “continental” philosophy—to the present day.

Search is much more than just finding something; concepts such as Information Architecture, Information Organization, and Findability are very important when implementing SharePoint. Come to this session to see how SharePoint 2010’s enhanced Search capability (such as the Managed Metadata Service) can address these concepts and help make your Search implementation much more effective.

2. Integrating SharePoint 2010 Workflows into Backend Systems Using External Data Exchange Services
The key aspect of any workflow is its capability to handle a large variety data. Traditionally SharePoint workflows were mostly focused on handling SharePoint data in the form of list items and documents. However, it is not an uncommon need to deal with back-end systems, issuing tasks that may take days to complete. So what do you do? You put your workflow to sleep and get it to wake up when stuff happened. The only difficulty is that in SharePoint 2007 you can only be notified of changes to SharePoint data. Waking up is not so easy after all! In the real world, this means that you relay communication through hidden lists. In SharePoint 2010 this is going to change in a profound way. You will be able to extend the workflow runtime with custom External Data Exchange Services, allowing you to relay information and communicate with the workflow using standard Workflow Foundation patterns. Learn how to create these EDEs and the rich features they provide such as operation batching. Expect to see lots of code and demos in this technical session.

5. Upgrading your SharePoint 2007 solutions SharePoint 2010
With SharePoint 2010 a lot will change for developers, but of course you will still want to keep using some of the cool solutions that you built for SharePoint 2007. This session will explain how you can best upgrade the custom code that you wrote using Visual Studio 2008 for SharePoint 2007 to work with Visual Studio 2010 and SharePoint 2010. The session will demonstrate the project upgrade tools, show you the APIs that are involved in migrating and what new APIs you should consider using, and will tell you when you will be bound to have to upgrade your code manually.

Hard to believe anything other than luck and maybe fate, never mind a book, can make someone fall in love with you, but oddly enough, Leil Lowndes seems to offer the advice that can do just that in How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You. The sensation of falling in love comes from a chemical secreted by the nervous system, phenylethylamine (or PEA, as Lowndes calls it, as in “Scientists tell us only PEA-brained people fall in Love”), and the trick is to trigger the manufacture of PEA in your potential love partner, giving him or her the sensation of being in love.

Lowndes offers 85 techniques for “Hunters and Huntresses” to capture their “Quarry.” Much of what the book offers is common sense–the power of eye contact and compliments–but it’s presented in a new way and with such detail that it seems that it can’t help but work.

Following some of her advice will have you treading that fine line between nice and obsequious, and at times, this book may sound offensive to some, advising the reader to play what may sound like games. Lowndes is aware of this, and she offers some caveats, but still it is hard to get past advice such as, “Show him you’re smart, but remember–not too smart” or “Watch your Quarry’s reactions to outside stimuli, then show the same emotions.” In all fairness, Lowndes doesn’t play favorites: her advice to men and women can be equally appalling. Yet, the relaxed style of this book, presenting solid wisdom with a bit of scientific support, makes this book appealing, and, who knows, maybe it will make you more appealing, too! –Jenny Brown

Modern Oriental dance is characterized by powerful technique, step combinations, floor patterns and a focus on choreography, as well as a contemporary musical sensibility. In this program, Ranya Renee, New York-based star performer and instructor of Egyptian style dance, teaches two Modern Oriental choreographies a beginner version and a longer intermediate/advanced version as the focus of this video program. Each choreography is broken into combinations that are taught step-by-step, with practice drills to get the movements of the choreographies into your body.

The two drills sections – beginner and intermediate/advanced enable you to repeat step combinations, built gradually so that you can climb the steps to mastery of a wide array of variations. A special section of the program gives you helpful hints on learning step combinations, so that you can build confidence as you learn more complex step sequences and integrate them into your muscle memory.

A vital part of Ranya’s teaching method is its emphasis on musicality and on understanding the structure of Oriental dance music. Ranya points out important melodic and rhythmic features of the music accompanying each combination, helping you to sharpen your listening and counting skills, and learn how particular dance movements can express typical turns of melody and rhythm. You’ll learn what to listen for, so you can respond to the music with feeling.

Ranya s holistic approach, focused on freeing your breath as you develop your physicality, will help you build connections between the music, your body, and your expression as a dancer. Special tips for performers are interspersed throughout, to coach you in relating to an audience, while executing the steps with a sense of drama and fun.
